Good Evening Everyone!
Our first major STEM project is off and running! Last week students applied for jobs that they felt they were qualified for and of course interested in. I received 20 applications, I interviewed 13, and "hired" 10. They definitely made it hard for me to decide on the final 10 for the job! They all did an amazing job in their interviews.
Last Friday was our first day on the job. We worked hard and accomplished a lot. They were given a driving question which gives them the focus of their task. However, today they revised it a little to make it their own. So the driving question in the parent letter has been changed to "Can we create a game/activity for a god/goddess of Ancient Greece?" Once they decided on their groups they created a "Need To Know" list and we then compiled everyone's ideas into one chart. After this they explored ideas by accessing the internet. Another chart was made using their notes from their research.
Today we completed quite a few different activities. We started by finding out a little bit more about the games that children played in Ancient Greece. Groups presented via charts what their plan is for their game. Students then wrote on Post-it's their "I Likes & I Wonders" for each chart. This was done to give each group feedback on their idea. After reading the Post-it's within their group, they used the ideas they liked and shared their revised game plan. After sharing what they liked about the feedback we did another activity called "Fishbowl". The students really enjoyed this activity even though a few them had a difficult time "staying invisible"! :) When we do a Fishbowl, students sit around in a circle a discuss another group's activity while that group sits and listens(stays invisible and is not able to talk). Each group received some very valuable feedback from their peers!
Tomorrow(Tuesday) we plan to complete Team Task charts and create a schedule for when the tasks need to be completed. We will also learn a little more about the Ancient Greek Olympic Games. Then they will dive into their task and start creating their game/activity!
Everyday we have "reporters" coming into the room to interview different employees. Mr. Barkley's employees will be writing or blogging about what all the different groups are doing. So keep watch for a STEM newspaper!
